Owning a vehicle involves significant responsibilities that extend beyond safe driving. The vehicle itself must be legally titled, registered, insured, and maintained in safe working order to be operated on public roads. Understanding these legal and mechanical requirements is essential for avoiding fines, license suspensions, and other serious penalties, and this knowledge is a key part of being a responsible vehicle owner in Massachusetts.
Title, Registration, and Insurance
Before a vehicle can be driven, it must be properly documented with the state. This involves three distinct but related components: title, registration, and insurance.
- Vehicle Title: A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. It contains information such as the vehicle identification number (VIN), the owner’s name and address, and any liens from lenders. You must apply for a title within 10 days of purchasing a vehicle. The title is the official proof that you are the legal owner.
- Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially linking a vehicle to its owner so it can be legally operated on public roads. Upon registering, you receive a registration certificate, license plates, and a renewal sticker. The registration certificate must be carried in the vehicle or by the operator at all times. Registration must be renewed annually.
- License Plates: Massachusetts requires two license plates, one for the front and one for the back of the vehicle. Both plates must be securely fastened, kept clean and legible, and not be obstructed by any covers or frames. The rear plate must be illuminated by a white light and be visible from at least 60 feet at night. The annual registration renewal sticker must be placed in the upper right-hand corner of the rear license plate.
