The process at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is straightforward, but it includes strict requirements for maintaining a clean record before you even begin. This roadmap breaks down the official rules so you can get your permit and hit the road.
1. The Learner’s Permit
Your journey begins at age 15. To get your permit, you must pass the written knowledge test.
- The Exam: The test consists of 20 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 16 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Clean Record: Uniquely, applicants under 18 must have maintained a “clean” driving record (no recalls, suspensions, or revocations) for the 2 years prior to applying.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (Real ID compliant) to the DMV.
- Proof of Identity & Age: (e.g., Certified Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Information: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Vermont Residency: Two documents showing your name and current Vermont address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or two pieces of mail).
- Parental Consent: If under 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the application.
3. Junior Driver’s License (JDL) Rules
