Getting Your Minnesota Driver’s License: The 2026 Roadmap
Taking the first step toward getting your Minnesota driver’s license is an exciting milestone. While the process at Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) can seem complex, we’ve broken down the official rules to help you get your instruction permit and hit the road with confidence.
1. The Instruction Permit
Your journey begins at age 15. To get your permit, you must pass the written knowledge test.
- The Exam: The test consists of 40 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 32 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Blue Card: If you are under 18, you must present a “Blue Card” proving you have completed the classroom portion of driver education and are enrolled in behind-the-wheel training.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents to the exam station.
- Primary Identity: One document containing your full name and birth date (e.g., Certified Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Secondary Identity: One secondary document (e.g., Social Security Card or School ID with photo).
- Social Security Number: You must provide your SSN.
- Residency: If applying for a Real ID, you need two documents proving your Minnesota address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement).
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
Minnesota’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system ensures you gain experience safely.
- Holding Period: You must hold your permit for at least 6 months conviction-free before taking the road test.
- Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 15 hours at night.
- Parent Class Discount: If your parent completes a 90-minute awareness class, the required log drops to 40 hours (15 at night).
- White Card: For the road test, you must present a “White Card” proving completion of behind-the-wheel instruction.
