The process at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) allows you to start earlier than almost any other state. This checklist breaks down the official requirements so you can get your Instruction Permit and hit the road.
1. The Instruction Permit
Your journey begins at age 14. You must pass a vision screening and the written knowledge test to receive your permit.
- The Exam: The test consists of 25 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 20 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed adult (18+) with at least one year of driving experience.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (no photocopies) to the exam station.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., Certified U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Residency: Two documents showing your name and South Dakota physical address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement) that are less than one year old.
- Parental Consent: If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application.
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
South Dakota’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program ensures you gain experience safely before driving solo.
- Holding Period: You must hold your permit for 275 days. If you complete a state-approved driver education course, this is reduced to 180 days.
- Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night and 10 hours in inclement weather.
- Restricted Minor’s Permit: After the permit phase, you upgrade to a restricted permit which allows solo driving between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
