Georgia Driver’s License Requirements 2026
Taking the first step toward getting your Georgia driver’s license is exciting! While the process at the Department of Driver Services (DDS) can seem complex, we’ve broken down the official rules to help you get your Class C Instructional Permit (CP) with confidence.
1. The Permit Phase
Your journey begins at age 15. To get your permit, you must pass a two-part knowledge exam.
- The Exam: The test consists of 40 questions split into two sections: 20 Road Rules and 20 Road Signs.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 15 questions correctly in each section (75%) to pass.
- Important: If you fail one section, you fail the entire exam.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (no photocopies) to the DDS.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., U.S. Birth Certificate or Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2).
- Residency: Two documents showing your Georgia address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement) dated within the last 6 months.
- School Enrollment: Applicants under 18 must present a DS-1 Certificate of Enrollment (signed and notarized by your school within the last 30 days).
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
Georgia enforces the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA) to ensure safety.
- Joshua’s Law: To upgrade to a Class D license at 16, you must complete an approved 30-hour Driver Ed course AND 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training (or 40 hours of supervised driving).
- ADAP: You must complete the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (usually offered in high school).
- Holding Period: You must hold your permit for 1 year and 1 day before applying for a license.
