Getting Your Nebraska Driver’s License: The 2026 Roadmap

Taking the first step toward getting your Nebraska driver’s license is an exciting milestone. While the process at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can seem complex, we’ve broken down the official rules to help you get your Learner’s Permit (LPD) with confidence.

1. The Learner’s Permit (LPD)

Your journey begins at age 15. To get your permit, you must pass a vision screening and the written knowledge test.

  • The Exam: The test consists of 25 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving rules.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 20 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
  • Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed adult (21+).

2. Required Documents Checklist

You must bring original documents to the DMV to process your application.

  • Proof of Identity: One document proving U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Status (e.g., Certified Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
  • Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
  • Residency: Two documents showing your name and Nebraska principal address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement, or mortgage document).
  • Parental Consent: If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application.

3. Rules for Drivers Under 18

Nebraska’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program ensures you gain experience safely before driving solo.

  • Holding Period: You must hold your LPD for at least 6 months before applying for a Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP).
  • Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours at night (or complete a DMV-approved driver safety course).
  • Provisional Restrictions: Once you get your POP, you may not drive between midnight and 6:00 AM unless driving to/from school or work.
