Getting your first driver’s license in Washington is an exciting milestone. The Department of Licensing (DOL) has specific age-based entry points and strict requirements for teen drivers. This roadmap breaks down the official rules to help you get your instruction permit and hit the road.
1. The Instruction Permit
Your starting age depends on your education path.
- Age 15: You may apply if you are enrolled in an approved driver-training course.
- Age 15 ½: You may apply without being enrolled in a course, provided you pass the knowledge test.
- The Exam: The knowledge test consists of 40 questions covering road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 32 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Validity: Your passing score is valid for 2 years.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents to the licensing office.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., Certified Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: You must provide your SSN.
- Washington Residency: Documents proving your physical address in Washington.
- Parental Consent: If under 18, a parent or guardian must accompany you to sign the Parental Authorization Affidavit. They must prove their identity and relationship to you. (If they cannot come, you must bring the form notarized).
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18 (IDL)
