Getting Your Indiana Driver’s License: The 2026 Roadmap
Getting your first driver’s license in Indiana is an exciting milestone. While the process at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) involves several steps, understanding the specific requirements for the “Crossroads of America” will help you succeed. Here is your roadmap to navigating the rules and hitting the road.
1. The Learner’s Permit
Your journey can begin as early as 15 years old.
- Eligibility (Age 15): You must be enrolled in a Driver Education program and present a Certificate of Driver Education (CDE) enrollment form.
- Eligibility (Age 16): If you are not enrolled in driver education, you must wait until you are 16 to apply.
- The Exam: The knowledge test consists of 50 questions split into two sections: 34 Road Rules and 16 Road Signs.
- Passing Score: You must score at least 80% on EACH component (roughly 28 rules and 14 signs correctly) to pass. Failing one section means failing the entire test.
2. Required Documents Checklist
Indiana requires original documents (Real ID standards) to process your application.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., U.S. Birth Certificate or Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card, W-2, or Paystub).
- Residency: Two documents proving your Indiana address (e.g., printed utility bill, bank statement) dated within the last 60 days.
- Driver Ed Form: The CDE form if you are 15 years old.
3. Rules for Drivers Under 21
Indiana’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system ensures you gain experience before driving solo.
- Holding Period: You must hold your learner’s permit for at least 180 days.
- Practice Hours: You must complete a log of 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
- Logbook: You must sign and present the Log of Supervised Driving (State Form 54706).
- Probationary License: Drivers under 21 receive a probationary license with passenger and night driving restrictions.
