1. The “No Permit” Practice Phase
You can begin learning to drive on public roads as soon as you turn 15 ½ years old. You do not need to visit the DMV to get a paper permit.
- Proof of Age: You must carry proof of age (e.g., Birth Certificate or Passport) in the vehicle at all times while driving.
- Supervision: You must be accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 25 years old.
- Driver Education: If you are under 18, you must complete an approved driver education course (30 hours classroom + 10 hours behind-the-wheel).
2. The Knowledge Test
When you apply for your Youth Operator License (at age 16+), you must pass the automated knowledge exam.
