Taking the first step toward getting your Texas driver’s license is an exciting milestone. The process at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) includes unique requirements like the “Impact Texas Drivers” program. Here is your roadmap to navigating the rules and hitting the road.

1. The Learner License

Your journey begins at age 15. You must pass the written knowledge exam to receive your license.

  • The Exam: The test consists of 30 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 21 questions correctly (70%) to pass.
  • Driver Education: If you are under 25, you are required to complete an approved driver education course (e.g., public school, parent-taught, or commercial school).

2. Required Documents Checklist

You must bring original documents to the Driver License Office.

  • Proof of Identity: (e.g., U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
  • Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card).
  • Residency: Two documents proving your Texas residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement, or insurance card).
  • School Enrollment: If under 18, you must present a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form signed by school officials.

3. Rules for New Drivers (GDL & ITD)

Texas has specific requirements for teens and young adults before taking the driving test.

  • Holding Period: You must hold your learner license for at least 6 months (if under 18).
  • Practice Hours: You must log 30 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours completed at night.
