1. The Level One Learner’s Permit
If you are at least 16 years old, your journey begins with the written knowledge exam (also called the “Rules of the Road” test).
- The Exam: The test consists of 30 questions covering traffic laws, signs, and safety rules.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 24 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Validity: The permit is valid for 12 months and is the first step of the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (no photocopies) to the DMV to process your application.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Proof of Residency: Two documents showing your name and Delaware address (e.g., utility bills, bank statements) postmarked within the last 60 days.
