This checklist breaks down the official requirements to help you get on the road legally.
1. The Learner Permit
Your starting age depends on your education path. You can apply at 14 ½ years old if enrolled in a state-approved traffic education program, or at 16 years old without it.
- The Exam: The knowledge test consists of 33 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 27 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, or authorized adult.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (Real ID compliant) to the exam station.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., Certified U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Proof of Presence: Documents proving authorized presence in the U.S.
- Residency: Two documents showing your name and Montana residential address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement).
- Consent: If under 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the application to accept financial responsibility.
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
Montana’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program ensures you gain experience safely before driving solo.
- Holding Period: You must hold your learner permit for at least 6 months without any traffic violations or alcohol/drug offenses.
- Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours at night.
