New Mexico Driver’s License Requirements 2026
Getting your first driver’s license in the Land of Enchantment is an exciting milestone. While the process involves specific steps unique to New Mexico—like the “None for the Road” program—knowing exactly what to expect at the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) will help you pass with confidence.
1. The Instructional Permit
Your journey begins at age 15. You must pass a vision screening and the written knowledge test to receive your permit.
- The Exam: The test consists of 25 questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 18 questions correctly (72%) to pass.
- Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed adult (21+) who has been licensed for at least 3 years.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (Real ID compliant) to the MVD.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., Certified U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Residency: Two documents showing your name and New Mexico physical address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement).
- Driver Ed Proof: Evidence of enrollment in a state-approved driver education course (Referral Card).
3. Rules for New Drivers (GDL & Adult)
New Mexico has distinct requirements depending on your age group.
- Teens (Under 18): You must hold your permit for 6 months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night).
- Young Adults (18–24): You are required to complete the “None for the Road” self-taught DWI awareness course before getting your license.
