Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Owning and operating a vehicle comes with significant legal responsibilities, from proving ownership to ensuring the vehicle is properly equipped and insured. These rules are not just administrative hurdles; they are designed to ensure every car on the road is safe to operate and that there is a system of financial accountability in the event of a crash. A firm grasp of these requirements is necessary to avoid fines, license suspensions, and to pass the driver’s license exam.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Properly titling, registering, and insuring a vehicle are the first steps to legally driving in Illinois. Each of these components serves a distinct and mandatory purpose.

Vehicle Title vs. Registration

  • A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. You must apply for a title in your name within 20 days of purchasing a vehicle. The title is essential for legally selling the vehicle in the future.
  • Vehicle Registration is the process of officially registering your vehicle with the state, which allows you to legally operate it on public roads. Registration must be renewed annually. Upon registration, you receive license plates and a registration sticker. A valid registration card must be kept in the vehicle or with the driver at all times.

License Plate Requirements

In Illinois, most passenger vehicles and trucks are required to display two license plates: one on the front and one on the rear. Motorcycles, mopeds, and trailers are only required to display one plate on the rear. License plate frames must not cover any of the information on the plate. When a vehicle is sold, the license plates remain with the seller, not the vehicle.

Pro-Tip:
When you renew your registration online, print the receipt and keep it in your vehicle. This receipt serves as valid proof of registration for 30 days, which is useful if you are stopped by law enforcement before your new sticker arrives in the mail.
