Driver’s License Requirements in California: 2026 Guide
Taking the first step toward getting your license in the Golden State is an exciting milestone. The process is strict, but we have distilled the official California DMV Handbook into a clear, actionable plan. Here is everything you need to know to pass on your first visit.
1. The Instruction Permit (Age 15 ½)
You can start your journey at age 15 ½. Before you get behind the wheel, you must pass the knowledge test.
- For Applicants Under 18: The test consists of 46 questions. You must answer 38 correctly to pass.
- For Applicants 18+: The test is shorter, with 30 questions. You need 24 correct answers to pass.
- Retake Rule: If you are under 18 and fail, there is a mandatory 7-day waiting period before you can try again. Study hard—waiting a week is frustrating.
2. Required Documents Checklist (Real ID)
We strongly recommend applying for a Real ID to ensure your license is federally compliant. You must bring original documents:
- Proof of Identity: One document (e.g., valid U.S. Passport or certified Birth Certificate).
- Social Security: Your Social Security number (card not always required if number is known, but recommended).
- Residency: Two different documents proving you live in California (e.g., utility bill, lease, or bank statement).
3. The “Under 18” Provisional Rules
California has one of the strictest Graduated Driver License programs. If you are under 18:
- Professional Training: Unlike many states, you are required to complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor.
- Practice Hours: You must also log 50 hours of practice with an adult (25+), including 10 hours at night.
- The 6-Month Wait: You must hold your permit for at least six months before taking the driving test.
