Chapter 9: Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Even the most careful driver can experience a sudden vehicle malfunction or be involved in a traffic collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations is a critical driving skill that can prevent further damage, injury, or even death. Understanding your legal duties after a crash or during a traffic stop is equally important for protecting your driving privileges and navigating the situation properly.

Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but a prepared driver can often navigate the situation safely. The key is to avoid panic and follow established procedures.

A diagram shows the rear view of a vehicle with a driver using hand signals to indicate a left turn, a right turn, and a stop or slow down.

Tire Blowout

A blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure in a tire. It is often accompanied by a loud sound, a lurch or pull in the steering, and a flapping noise.

  1. Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: The vehicle will pull strongly toward the side of the blown tire. A firm, two-handed grip is essential to maintain control.
  2. Do Not Slam on the Brakes: Braking hard can cause a complete loss of control.
  3. Ease Off the Accelerator: Let the vehicle slow down gradually on its own.
  4. Find a Safe Place to Pull Over: Signal and steer the vehicle completely off the roadway onto the shoulder. Stop in a safe, level location away from traffic.
  5. Activate Emergency Flashers: Warn other drivers that your vehicle is disabled.
