Even the most careful driver can experience a sudden vehicle malfunction or be involved in a traffic stop or collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations is a hallmark of a safe, responsible driver. This knowledge is not only vital for protecting yourself and others on the road but is also a key part of demonstrating the competence required to earn and maintain a Missouri driver license.
Every driver has a legal and ethical duty to respond properly to emergencies and official interactions on the road. This includes knowing the correct procedures for handling common vehicle failures, understanding your legal obligations after a crash, and interacting safely and appropriately with law enforcement during a traffic stop.
Vehicle Malfunctions
Panic is the greatest danger during a vehicle emergency. The key is to remain calm, maintain control of the vehicle, and guide it to a safe stop off the roadway.
Tire Blowout
A blowout is a sudden loss of air pressure in a tire, which can cause the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.
- Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Hold the wheel with both hands to counteract the pull.
- Do Not Brake: Do not slam on the brakes. The sudden shift in weight can cause you to lose control.
- Ease Off the Accelerator: Let the vehicle slow down gradually on its own.
- Pull Off the Road: Once you have slowed to a safe, controllable speed, signal and steer to the shoulder or a safe area. Brake gently only when you are almost stopped.
