9. → Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities
While knowing the rules of the road is essential, a driver’s ability to handle unexpected emergencies and understand their legal duties is what truly defines a safe and responsible operator. Vehicle malfunctions, collisions, and traffic stops can happen to anyone, and reacting correctly under pressure can prevent a bad situation from becoming a tragic one. This knowledge is not only vital for passing the driver’s license exam but is a critical component of ensuring safety and legal compliance throughout a driver’s life.
Vehicle Malfunctions
Mechanical failures can occur without warning. Knowing the correct procedures can help a driver maintain control of the vehicle and come to a safe stop.
Tire Blowout
A sudden loss of air pressure in a tire can cause the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.
- Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Use both hands to hold the wheel straight and resist the pull.
- Do Not Brake Hard: Slamming on the brakes can cause a loss of control.
- Ease Off the Accelerator: Gradually release the gas pedal to slow down naturally.
- Pull Off the Road: Once the vehicle has slowed and is under control, signal, check for a safe spot, and pull completely off the pavement. Activate your emergency flashers.
Common Mistake:
The instinctive reaction during a tire blowout is to slam on the brakes. This is the most dangerous thing to do, as it can lock the wheels and send the vehicle into a spin. The priority is to maintain steering control first, then slow down gradually.
