Chapter 7: Safe Driving Practice

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Adopting safe driving practices is the key to preventing collisions and navigating the roads confidently. While the DMV test assesses knowledge of specific rules, safe driving is about applying defensive principles—anticipating hazards, managing space, and staying focused—in every moment behind the wheel. Mastering these techniques not only ensures you pass your exams but, more importantly, provides the skills needed to protect yourself and others for a lifetime of driving.

Principles of Defensive Driving

Defensive driving is a proactive approach where a driver anticipates potential hazards and takes action to avoid them before they become emergencies. It involves constantly assessing the changing environment around the vehicle.

Scanning

Effective scanning means keeping your eyes moving and looking far beyond the vehicle directly in front of you. A driver should scan the road 10 to 15 seconds ahead. In city driving, this is about one block; on the highway, it is about a quarter of a mile. This allows a driver to see potential hazards early and react smoothly. Scanning involves:

  • Looking at the entire traffic scene, not just the middle of the road.
  • Watching for brake lights several cars ahead to anticipate a slowdown.
  • Checking mirrors every few seconds to know the position of vehicles nearby.
  • Observing pedestrians, bicyclists, and parked cars that might create a hazard.
