Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

A driver’s responsibility extends beyond their actions behind the wheel; it includes ensuring the vehicle they operate is legally compliant and mechanically sound. Understanding the requirements for title, registration, insurance, and essential safety equipment is crucial for avoiding fines, legal trouble, and dangerous malfunctions. This knowledge is also a key component of the pre-drive inspection on the behind-the-wheel test, where an applicant must demonstrate that their vehicle is safe and legal to drive.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Operating a vehicle legally in California involves three key components: title, registration, and insurance. Each serves a distinct but vital purpose.

Vehicle Title and Registration

The title, often called the “pink slip,” is the legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. It is used when transferring ownership, such as selling the car. The registration is the process of officially recording the vehicle with the DMV, which grants permission to operate it on public roads. Registration must be renewed annually. Upon registration, the DMV provides a registration card, which must be kept in the vehicle, and stickers for the rear license plate to show the current registration year and month.

California law requires most vehicles to display two license plates: one on the front and one on the rear. They must be securely fastened, clean, and clearly legible. Covering a license plate with any material that obstructs the view of the letters or numbers is illegal.

Minimum Liability Insurance

Financial responsibility, typically in the form of liability insurance, is mandatory for all drivers in California. This insurance covers costs for injuries or property damage you may cause to others in a collision. The state sets minimum coverage amounts that every policy must meet.

  • Bodily Injury/Death (one person) — $15,000
  • Bodily Injury/Death (more than one person) — $30,000
  • Property Damage — $5,000
