Chapter 3: Parking Rules

Knowing how to park your vehicle legally and safely is a critical driving skill that affects traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and emergency vehicle access. General Parking Rules

Properly parking a vehicle involves more than just finding an empty space. It requires a sequence of actions to ensure the vehicle is safe and secure.

Securing Your Vehicle

Whenever you park, you must make your vehicle secure.

1. Find a legal and safe parking spot.
2. After stopping, set the parking brake firmly. This is a critical step that provides a mechanical backup to your transmission’s park gear.
3. Place the vehicle in “Park” (for an automatic transmission) or in “First” or “Reverse” gear (for a manual transmission).
4. Turn off the engine and remove the key.
5. Check for traffic, especially bicyclists and motorcyclists, before opening your door.
6. Lock the vehicle to prevent theft.
