Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Maintaining a vehicle in safe, legal operating condition is a fundamental responsibility of every driver. A properly titled, registered, and insured vehicle with all required safety equipment is not just a legal mandate; it is your first line of defense against collisions, breakdowns, and financial liability. Understanding these requirements is essential for passing the driver’s exam and for ensuring every trip you take is a safe one.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Before a vehicle can be legally driven on South Carolina roads, it must be properly titled, registered, and insured. These three components are distinct but interconnected.

• Vehicle Title: A title is a legal document that establishes a person or business as the legal owner of a vehicle. It is the official proof of ownership. When a vehicle is sold, the title must be legally transferred to the new owner, who then applies for a new title in their name at the SCDMV.
• Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording the vehicle with the SCDMV, which grants permission for it to be operated on public roads. Upon registering, you receive a license plate and a registration card. The registration card must be kept in the vehicle at all times. Registrations must be renewed periodically, and you must pay property taxes on the vehicle before the SCDMV will renew the registration.
• License Plates: South Carolina requires a single license plate to be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. The plate must be kept clean, clearly visible, and securely fastened. It must also be illuminated by a white light at night so it is visible from at least 50 feet.

Minimum Liability Insurance

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle in South Carolina without liability insurance. The insurance policy must meet or exceed the state’s minimum requirements. This coverage protects you financially by paying for damages you cause to others in a collision.
