8. → Sharing the Road
Highways are shared by a diverse mix of users, from pedestrians and bicyclists to large commercial trucks and emergency vehicles. Understanding how to safely interact with each of these groups is a core component of defensive driving and a major focus of the driver’s license exam. Knowing the specific laws, such as when to stop for a school bus or how to react to an emergency vehicle, is essential for preventing tragic and avoidable collisions.
Pedestrians and Bicyclists
Pedestrians and bicyclists are the most vulnerable users of the roadway. Drivers have a special responsibility to be alert and yield to them to prevent serious injury or death.
Driver Responsibilities to Pedestrians
- Crosswalks: Drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians who are in a crosswalk, whether it is marked with painted lines or is an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. You must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian has cleared your lane.
- Visually Impaired Pedestrians: You must come to a complete stop when you see a person who is guided by a dog or is using a white cane. Remain stopped until the person is safely across the street.
- General Caution: Always be prepared to stop for pedestrians, even if they are crossing in the middle of the block or against a signal. Children are especially unpredictable and may dart into the street without warning.
