Oklahoma Driver’s License Requirements 2026
Taking the first step toward getting your Oklahoma driver’s license is an exciting milestone. While the process at Service Oklahoma can seem complex, knowing exactly what to expect helps you approach it with confidence. Here is your roadmap to navigating the requirements and hitting the road legally.
1. The Learner Permit (Class D)
Your starting age depends on your education path.
- Age 15 ½: You may apply if you are enrolled in an approved Driver Education course (and present proof).
- Age 16: You may apply without Driver Education.
- The Exam: The knowledge test consists of 50 questions covering traffic laws, road rules, and safe driving practices.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 40 questions correctly (75%) to pass.
- Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed driver (21+) who has held a license for at least 2 years.
2. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents (no photocopies) to Service Oklahoma.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., Certified U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
- Residency: Two documents showing your name and Oklahoma physical address (e.g., utility bill, bank statement) are required for a REAL ID.
- Driver Ed Proof: If you are under 16, you must bring your Driver Education Completion Certificate or contract.
3. Rules for Drivers Under 18
Oklahoma’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program ensures you gain experience safely.
- Holding Period: You must hold your learner permit for at least 6 months conviction-free.
- Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours at night.
- Affidavit: A parent or guardian must sign an Affidavit of Driver Training to certify these hours.
- Intermediate License: After passing the road test, you receive an Intermediate License which restricts driving between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
