Ensuring your vehicle is legally titled, registered, insured, and properly equipped is a fundamental legal responsibility of every owner and driver. This knowledge is crucial for the driver’s exam, as it covers the essential documents and safety features required to operate on Oklahoma roads. A well-maintained and legally compliant vehicle is not only a requirement of the law but also a critical component of road safety for yourself and others.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Before a vehicle can be legally driven on public roads, it must have a valid title, be registered with the state, and be covered by liability insurance. These three components are distinct but interconnected.

Vehicle Title vs. Registration

• Title: A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. It is like a deed for a house. When a vehicle is bought or sold, the title must be legally transferred to the new owner through Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator.
• Registration: This is the process of officially registering your vehicle with the state, which allows you to operate it on public roads. Registration must be renewed annually. Upon successful registration, you receive a license plate and a decal (sticker) showing the month and year of expiration.

License Plate Requirements

In Oklahoma, every vehicle must display a license plate on the rear. The plate must be securely fastened, kept clean and clearly legible at all times, and be illuminated by a white light at night so it is visible from a distance. It is illegal to obscure the plate in any way.
