Knowing the correct procedures to follow in these high-stress situations is a critical component of driver education that can prevent further damage, reduce injuries, and ensure you meet your legal obligations. Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but staying calm and knowing the correct response can prevent a loss of control and a serious crash.

Tire Blowout

A blowout is a rapid loss of tire pressure. A front-tire blowout will pull the vehicle sharply in the direction of the flat tire. A rear-tire blowout will cause the vehicle to sway or fishtail.

1. Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Hold the wheel with both hands to counteract the pull and maintain a straight course.
2. Do Not Brake Hard: Immediately slamming on the brakes can lock the wheels and cause a complete loss of control.
3. Ease Off the Accelerator: Gradually release the gas pedal to slow the vehicle down naturally.
4. Steer to Safety: Once the vehicle has slowed to a manageable speed, signal and steer to a safe location on the shoulder of the road, well away from traffic.
