7. → Safe Driving Practice
Beyond simply knowing the traffic laws, becoming a truly safe driver requires a proactive mindset and a commitment to defensive driving techniques. These practices are designed to help you anticipate and react to the mistakes of others, manage changing road conditions, and maintain full control of your vehicle at all times. Mastering these skills is not only crucial for passing your road test but is the key to a lifetime of safe, crash-free driving.
Principles of Defensive Driving
Defensive driving means being constantly aware of your surroundings and prepared for the unexpected. It involves three core principles: scanning, maintaining a space cushion, and managing blind spots.
Scanning the Road
Effective scanning involves continuously moving your eyes to see the entire driving environment, not just the road directly in front of you.
- Look Ahead: In city traffic, you should look at least one block ahead, which is about 10-15 seconds of travel time. On highways, look even further down the road. This gives you time to see and react to hazards like stopped traffic, pedestrians, or debris.
- Check Mirrors: Check your rearview and side mirrors every 6-8 seconds to be aware of vehicles approaching from behind or moving into adjacent lanes.
- Scan Intersections: Before entering any intersection, look left, then right, then left again. Even with a green light, you must scan for cross-traffic that may be running a red light.
