10. → Your Vehicle
A safe driver needs a safe vehicle. Ensuring your car is legally titled, registered, and equipped according to New Hampshire law is a fundamental responsibility of ownership. These requirements are in place not just to create a legal record, but to ensure that every vehicle on the road meets a minimum standard of safety, protecting you and all other road users.
To be legally operated in New Hampshire, a vehicle must have a valid title (for most models), be registered annually with the state, and meet financial responsibility requirements. Furthermore, every vehicle must be equipped with specific safety features that are checked during a required annual inspection.
Title, Registration, and Insurance
These three components are the legal foundation of vehicle ownership and operation in New Hampshire.
- Vehicle Title: A title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. In New Hampshire, a title is required for most motor vehicles with a model year of 2000 or newer. Vehicles with a model year of 1999 or older are exempt from titling requirements; ownership is transferred using the old registration and a bill of sale. When a titled vehicle is sold, the title must be signed over to the new owner, who then applies for a new title in their name.
- Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording a vehicle with the state, which allows it to be driven on public roads. In New Hampshire, registration is an annual process that expires on the last day of the owner’s birth month. It is a two-part process: first, the owner pays permit fees at their local town or city clerk’s office; second, they pay the state registration fee to receive their license plates and registration certificate. This certificate must be kept in the vehicle at all times when it is being operated.
- License Plates: A vehicle must display two license plates, one on the front and one on the rear, which must be kept clean and legible.
