9. → Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities
Even the most careful driver can experience an unexpected vehicle malfunction or be involved in a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations is a critical driving skill that protects you, your passengers, and other road users. Understanding your legal duties after a crash or during a traffic stop is equally important for ensuring your safety and complying with New Hampshire law.
This chapter covers the essential procedures for handling common vehicle emergencies, from tire blowouts to brake failure. It also details the legal steps every driver must take following a collision and the proper, safe conduct expected during a traffic stop with law enforcement.
Vehicle Malfunctions
A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but knowing the correct response can prevent a dangerous situation from becoming a disaster.
Tire Blowout
A blowout is a sudden loss of air pressure in a tire, which will cause the vehicle to pull sharply in the direction of the failed tire.
- Do not brake. Slamming on the brakes is the worst possible reaction, as it can cause a complete loss of control.
- Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands to counteract the pull.
- Ease your foot off the accelerator and allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
- Once the vehicle has slowed to a safe, manageable speed, steer it off the roadway, come to a stop, and activate your emergency flashers.
