12. → Towing a Trailer
Towing a trailer requires a distinct set of skills and knowledge beyond standard driving. Understanding the principles of proper loading, the function of required equipment, and how a trailer changes a vehicle’s handling is crucial for safety. Mastering these concepts is not only necessary to avoid dangerous situations like trailer sway or collisions but is also a key part of being a responsible and prepared driver.
Operating a vehicle with a trailer attached fundamentally changes its dynamics, affecting acceleration, braking, and maneuverability. Drivers must adapt their techniques and be vigilant about equipment and loading to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.
Equipment and Loading
Before a trip begins, ensuring the trailer is properly equipped and loaded is the most critical step for a safe journey.
Required Equipment
- Hitch: The connection point between the tow vehicle and the trailer. The most common type is a ball-and-hitch coupler. The hitch, ball, and all mounting hardware must be rated for the gross weight of the trailer.
- Safety Chains: Every trailer must be connected to the tow vehicle with two safety chains. These chains act as a backup connection if the primary hitch fails. They must be strong enough to hold the trailer’s total weight and should be crossed under the trailer tongue in an “X” pattern. This prevents the tongue from dropping to the pavement if it detaches.
- Lights: The trailer’s electrical system must be connected to the tow vehicle to operate the trailer’s lights. Required lights include taillights, brake lights, and turn signals that work in sync with the tow vehicle.
- Brakes: In Nevada, a trailer must be equipped with its own braking system if its gross weight is 3,000 pounds or more. These brakes are typically activated by the tow vehicle’s brake pedal and are essential for safe stopping.
