Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Properly titling, registering, and maintaining a vehicle are fundamental legal responsibilities of every owner. These processes ensure that a vehicle is officially accounted for, financially protected through insurance, and mechanically safe for operation on public roads. Adhering to these requirements is essential for avoiding legal penalties and is a cornerstone of being a safe, responsible driver.

Every vehicle operated in Nevada must meet specific legal and safety standards. This includes having the correct legal documents, maintaining continuous insurance coverage, and ensuring all required safety equipment is in good working order.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

These three components are the legal foundation of vehicle ownership and operation.

Vehicle Title and Registration

A vehicle’s title and registration are two distinct but related documents.

• A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. It contains information such as the owner’s name, address, and the vehicle identification number (VIN). When a vehicle is sold, the title is used to formally transfer ownership from the seller to the buyer.
• A Vehicle Registration is the formal process of authorizing a vehicle for use on public roads. It involves paying fees to the state and receiving a registration certificate and license plates. The registration must be renewed periodically, and the certificate must be kept in the vehicle or be available electronically. New residents must register their vehicles in Nevada within 30 days of establishing residency.

License Plates

License plates must be securely attached to the rear of the vehicle and be clearly visible at all times. The rear plate must be illuminated by a white light that makes it legible from 50 feet at night. It is illegal to obscure the plate with any material. If a driver cancels their Nevada insurance, they are legally required to cancel the vehicle’s registration and surrender the license plates on the same day to avoid penalties.
