9. → Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities
Even the most careful driver can face an unexpected vehicle malfunction or be involved in a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations can prevent a minor problem from becoming a catastrophe and ensure you meet your legal obligations. This knowledge is not just for safety; it is a critical part of being a responsible driver and will be tested on your knowledge exam.
Vehicle Malfunctions
A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but a prepared driver can maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
Tire Blowout
A blowout will cause the vehicle to pull sharply in the direction of the failed tire.
1. Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands. Do not slam on the brakes.
2. Take your foot off the accelerator to allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
3. Steer to keep the vehicle traveling straight.
4. Once you have slowed to a safe speed and have control, gently apply the brakes and pull off the road to a safe location.
Brake Failure
If your brake pedal suddenly goes to the floor with no resistance, you must act quickly.
1. Rapidly pump the brake pedal several times. This may build up enough pressure to activate the brakes.
2. If pumping fails, use the parking brake. Apply it slowly and steadily; pulling it too hard can lock the rear wheels and cause a skid.
3. Shift to a lower gear. This will use the engine to help slow the vehicle.
4. Use your horn and lights to warn other drivers. Steer toward the side of the road or look for an escape route, like an open field or an uphill ramp.
