Chapter 3: Parking Rules

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Knowing how to park a vehicle legally and safely is a fundamental responsibility for every driver. Improper parking can obstruct traffic, create hazards for pedestrians and other drivers, and block access for emergency vehicles. The rules for where, when, and how to park are a key part of the Kansas driver’s knowledge test and are strictly enforced to maintain order and safety on public roadways.

General Parking Rules

Properly parking a vehicle involves more than just finding an empty space. It requires a sequence of actions to ensure the vehicle is secure and positioned correctly according to the law and the specific environment.

Securing the Vehicle

Before leaving a parked vehicle, a driver must ensure it will not move.

  1. Set the Parking Brake: Always set the parking brake firmly. This provides a mechanical lock on the wheels that is independent of the transmission.
  2. Place in Gear: For an automatic transmission, shift the gear selector to “Park.” For a manual transmission, shift into reverse when facing downhill or first gear when facing uphill.
  3. Turn Off the Engine and Remove the Key: Never leave a vehicle running and unattended. Removing the key prevents theft.
  4. Lock the Doors: Secure the vehicle and its contents by locking all doors.
