Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Properly managing your driver’s license and vehicle records is a crucial, ongoing responsibility. Understanding how to interact with the Kansas Division of Vehicles (DMV), keep your information current, and comply with federal standards like Real ID prevents legal complications that could jeopardize your driving privileges. This knowledge saves time and ensures your license remains valid, which is the foundation of being a legal and responsible driver.

Interacting with the DMV

The Kansas Division of Vehicles offers a mix of online and in-person services to manage licensing and vehicle needs. Knowing which service to use can save significant time and effort.

Online vs. In-Person Services

Many routine transactions can be completed online through the official Kansas Department of Revenue website or the iKan mobile app.

  • Online Services: These typically include renewing a driver’s license (for eligible drivers), obtaining a duplicate license if yours is lost or stolen, and updating your address on file. Kansas also offers an online knowledge exam for non-commercial licenses.
  • In-Person Services: A visit to a driver’s license station is required for certain transactions. These include applying for a first-time driver’s license or instruction permit, changing your legal name, and applying for a Real ID for the first time.

Appointments

Appointments are highly recommended for all in-person visits to a driver’s license station. Scheduling an appointment online can drastically reduce wait times. While some stations may accept walk-ins, they are served on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is no guarantee of being seen the same day.

Updating Your Address and Name

  • Address Change: Kansas law requires drivers to notify the Division of Vehicles of any change of address within 10 days. This can be done online or in person. Keeping your address current is critical, as official notices regarding your license or registration will be sent to the last address on file.
  • Name Change: A legal name change (due to marriage, divorce, or court order) must be completed in person at a driver’s license station. You must bring the original legal document that proves the name change, such as a certified marriage certificate or court order. The DMV will not accept photocopies.
