9. → Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities
Even the most careful driver can face an unexpected vehicle malfunction, a collision, or a traffic stop. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations is a critical component of driver safety and legal compliance. This knowledge can prevent a minor problem from becoming a catastrophe, protect your legal rights, and ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Vehicle Malfunctions
A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but a prepared driver can maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop. The key is to avoid panic and follow a clear procedure.
Tire Blowout
A blowout is a rapid loss of tire pressure that can cause the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.
- Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Do not slam on the brakes. The first and most important action is to maintain a firm, two-handed grip on the steering wheel to keep the vehicle moving straight.
- Do Not Brake Hard: Hard braking can lock the wheels and lead to a complete loss of control.
- Ease Off the Accelerator: Allow the vehicle to slow down gradually by taking your foot off the gas pedal.
- Find a Safe Place to Pull Over: Once the vehicle has slowed to a manageable speed, signal, check your surroundings, and steer to the shoulder or a safe area off the roadway. Activate your hazard lights.
