10. → Your Vehicle
A driver’s responsibility extends beyond their own actions to include the legal and mechanical condition of their vehicle. Ensuring a car is properly titled, registered, insured, and equipped is a legal requirement that underpins the entire system of driver accountability and safety. This knowledge is crucial not only for avoiding fines and legal trouble but also for guaranteeing the vehicle is safe to operate on public roads.
Title, Registration, and Insurance
A driver must be able to prove both ownership and the legal right to operate their vehicle on Georgia’s roads. These three components—title, registration, and insurance—are the foundation of legal vehicle operation.
Vehicle Title vs. Registration
- Title: A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. It is used when buying or selling the car. When a vehicle is purchased, the new owner must apply for a title in their name at their County Tag Office.
- Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording the vehicle with the state, which grants the legal authority to operate it on public roads. A valid registration is accompanied by a license plate (tag) and a registration card. In Georgia, vehicle registration must be renewed annually on the owner’s birthday. New residents have 30 days after establishing residency to register their vehicles in Georgia.
License Plates
A vehicle must display a valid license plate on its rear, securely fastened and clearly visible. The annual registration renewal provides a decal that must be affixed to the corner of the plate to show it is current.
