8. → Sharing the Road
Driving is a cooperative activity that involves safely interacting with a wide variety of other road users, from the most vulnerable pedestrians to the largest commercial trucks. Understanding the specific rules and best practices for sharing the road is a critical component of defensive driving and a major focus of the driver’s exam. Knowing how to properly yield, pass, and give space to others is essential for preventing crashes and ensuring everyone reaches their destination safely.
Pedestrians and Bicyclists
Drivers of motor vehicles bear the primary responsibility for protecting vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Due to their lack of protection, collisions involving these individuals are often severe or fatal.
Driver Responsibilities to Pedestrians
- Crosswalks: Drivers must yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. An unmarked crosswalk exists at any intersection where streets meet at approximately right angles. You must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian has cleared the lane in which you are driving.
- Blind Pedestrians: Any pedestrian using a guide dog or carrying a white cane has the absolute right-of-way. A driver must stop and take every precaution to avoid injuring them. Honking the horn is not advised as it can startle the person or their guide dog.
- General Caution: Be watchful for children near schools and in residential areas. Always look carefully for pedestrians before turning at an intersection or entering/exiting a driveway.
