Chapter 9: Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Knowing how to react when things go wrong is just as important as knowing how to drive when everything is right. Vehicle malfunctions, collisions, and traffic stops can be stressful, but understanding your legal duties and the correct procedures can prevent panic, reduce danger, and ensure you handle the situation responsibly. This knowledge is a critical part of your driver education, essential for your test, and vital for your safety on the road.

Every driver must be prepared to handle unexpected events. This includes knowing the correct mechanical responses to vehicle failures, understanding your legal obligations after a collision, and interacting safely and appropriately with law enforcement during a traffic stop.

Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden vehicle failure can be frightening. Knowing the correct steps to take can help you maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop.

A diagram shows the rear view of a vehicle with a driver using hand signals to indicate a left turn, a right turn, and a stop or slow down.

Tire Blowout

A blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure in a tire, which can cause the vehicle to pull sharply to one side.

  1. Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Do not panic. Hold the wheel with both hands to counteract the pull.
  2. Do Not Brake Hard: Slamming on the brakes can cause a loss of control.
  3. Ease Off the Accelerator: Let the vehicle slow down gradually on its own.
  4. Pull Off the Road: Once you have slowed to a safe speed, find a safe place to pull completely off the pavement. Turn on your emergency flashers.
