The Basic Speed Law in Missouri
The Basic Speed Law requires you to always drive at a speed that is “careful and prudent” for the current conditions, even if it is lower than the posted limit. You must slow down for hazards like bad weather, reduced visibility, heavy traffic, pedestrian activity, and blind intersections or hills.
You can be cited for violating this law even if you were not exceeding the posted speed limit. The posted limit is the maximum allowed under ideal conditions, but it is not always a safe speed.
