Alabama School Buses and Emergency Vehicles
Alabama law is very strict about school buses. When a school bus stops and flashes its red lights, all traffic, from both directions, must stop at least 20 feet away. The only exception is on a divided highway with a physical barrier; in that case, only traffic going in the same direction as the bus must stop. Violating this rule is a serious offense that can lead to a substantial fine and points on your record.
Alabama’s “Move Over Law” requires drivers to slow down and move over for emergency and service vehicles with flashing lights on the side of the road. On a multi-lane highway, you must move to the farthest lane from the vehicle. If an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights and a siren, you must pull to the right side of the road and stop, clearing any intersection first.
