Chapter 1: Your License to Drive

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Understanding Wyoming’s licensing requirements is the first step toward becoming a safe and legal driver. These rules are designed to ensure every driver has the fundamental knowledge and skill to operate a vehicle, protecting themselves and others on the road. Mastering this information is essential for passing the written knowledge test and for maintaining a valid license throughout one’s driving career.

A driver’s license is a privilege, not a right, granted by the state to individuals who meet specific requirements. It serves as official proof that a person is authorized to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Wyoming has several classifications and programs to ensure drivers are prepared for the road.

Glossary

  • Right-of-way — The legal right of a pedestrian or vehicle to proceed first in a particular situation or place.
  • Per-se BAC — The blood alcohol concentration level at which a driver is legally considered intoxicated, which is 0.08% for adults in Wyoming.
  • Implied consent — The principle that by driving on public roads, a driver has automatically agreed to submit to a chemical test for intoxication if requested by a law enforcement officer.
  • Divided highway — A road separated by a physical barrier or unpaved median where traffic moves in opposite directions on either side of the barrier.
  • Keep right/left-lane — The law requiring drivers to stay in the rightmost lane on a multi-lane highway except when passing, turning left, or when the right lane is blocked.
  • No-zone — The large blind spots around a commercial truck or bus where the driver cannot see smaller vehicles.
  • Hydroplaning — A dangerous condition where a layer of water builds between a vehicle’s tires and the road surface, leading to a loss of traction and control.
  • Reversible lane — A traffic lane where the direction of traffic flow can be changed to match the peak traffic patterns, typically controlled by overhead signals.

License Classes

Wyoming issues different classes of licenses based on the type of vehicle a person intends to drive. For non-commercial purposes, the primary classes are:

  • Class C: This is the standard driver’s license for operating regular passenger cars, trucks, vans, and any single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less. It also allows for towing a trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. Most drivers will only need a Class C license.
  • Class M: This is the motorcycle license. It authorizes the holder to operate a motorcycle or any motor-driven cycle on public roads. A Class M license can be a standalone license or added as an endorsement to a Class C license.

Wyoming Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) Program

The GDL program is designed to help young drivers gain experience under lower-risk conditions before obtaining full driving privileges. The program consists of two main stages for drivers under the age of 17.
