Chapter 3: Parking Rules

Knowing how to park a vehicle legally and safely is a fundamental driving skill that is often overlooked. Proper parking ensures that traffic can flow smoothly, pedestrians are safe, and emergency vehicles have unobstructed access when needed. Mastering these rules is essential not only for passing the driver’s license exam but also for being a courteous and responsible member of the driving community.

Parking involves much more than just stopping a vehicle in a designated space. It requires following specific procedures to secure the vehicle, adhering to laws about where and how to park, and understanding the meanings of various signs and curb markings. Wyoming’s laws are designed to prevent accidents and maintain order on public roadways.

General Parking Rules

Whenever a driver parks a vehicle, they must follow a set procedure and be proficient in different parking maneuvers.

Securing the Vehicle

Before leaving a parked vehicle, a driver must always:

1. Set the parking brake firmly.
2. Place the gear selector in “Park” (for automatic transmissions) or in gear (first or reverse for manual transmissions).
3. Turn off the engine and remove the key.
4. Lock the doors to prevent theft.
