10. → Your Vehicle
Ensuring your vehicle is legally titled, registered, and properly equipped is a fundamental responsibility of ownership. These requirements are not just bureaucratic hurdles; they are essential for public safety and accountability on the road. Understanding the laws regarding insurance, registration, and required safety equipment is crucial for passing the written exam and for avoiding significant fines, legal trouble, and the suspension of your driving privileges.
Title, Registration, and Insurance
Before a vehicle can be legally driven on Kentucky’s roads, the owner must address three key legal requirements: title, registration, and insurance.
Vehicle Title and Registration
- A Certificate of Title is a legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle. You receive this when you purchase a vehicle. It is the official record of who the owner is.
- Registration is the process of officially recording your vehicle with the state, which grants you the authority to operate it on public roads. This is done annually at your County Clerk’s office. Upon registration, you receive a registration certificate (which must be kept in the vehicle) and a license plate.
New residents must title and register their out-of-state vehicles within 15 days of establishing residency in Kentucky. License plates must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle and kept legible and illuminated at night.
