Getting Your Wyoming Driver’s License: The 2026 Roadmap

Getting your first driver’s license in the Cowboy State is a big step toward independence. While the process at Driver Services is straightforward, Wyoming has a unique “10-day” rule for permits that speeds up the process compared to other states. This roadmap breaks down the official requirements so you can get your permit and hit the road.

1. The Instruction Permit

Your journey begins at age 15. You must pass the written knowledge test to receive your permit.

  • The Exam: The test consists of 25 questions covering traffic laws, crash prevention, and road signs (identified by shape and color).
  • Passing Score: You must answer at least 20 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
  • Validity: This permit allows you to practice driving while accompanied by a licensed adult (18+) in the front seat.

2. Required Documents Checklist

You must bring original documents to Driver Services.

  • Proof of Identity: (e.g., State-certified Birth Certificate, valid U.S. Passport, or immigration documents).
  • Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card, W-2 form, or financial statement with SSN).
  • Residency: Two documents proving your Wyoming address (e.g., vehicle registration, rental agreement, or bank statement).
  • Parental Consent: If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign a release form.

3. Rules for Drivers Under 17 (GDL)

Wyoming’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) program ensures you gain experience safely.

  • Holding Period: You must hold your instruction permit for at least 10 days before applying for an Intermediate Permit.
  • Practice Hours: You must log 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 hours completed at night.
  • Intermediate License: At age 16 (after the 10-day permit period and practice), you can get an Intermediate License.
  • Restrictions: With the Intermediate License, you cannot drive between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM or carry more than one passenger under 18 (excluding family).
