Taking the first step toward getting your Michigan driver’s license is an exciting milestone. The process at the Secretary of State (SOS) office can seem complicated because it varies depending on your age. Here is exactly what you need to do to get on the road legally.
1. The GDL Program (Drivers Under 18)
Teens must follow the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) steps.
- Segment 1: You can start at 14 years and 8 months. You must complete 24 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
- Level 1 License: After Segment 1, you can apply for your Level 1 Learner’s License at age 14 years and 9 months.
- Segment 2: After holding your Level 1 license for 3 months and logging 30 practice hours, you must complete 6 hours of classroom instruction.
- Road Test: Eligible after completing Segment 2 and logging 50 total hours (10 at night).
2. The Adult Process (Drivers 18+)
If you are over 18, you skip the GDL segments but must still pass the knowledge exam.
- Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP): You must pass the written test to receive this permit.
- The Exam: The test consists of 50 questions covering traffic laws, signs, and safety.
- Passing Score: You must answer at least 40 questions correctly (80%) to pass.
- Practice Period: You must practice on your TIP for at least 30 days before taking a driving skills test.
3. Required Documents Checklist
You must bring original documents to the SOS office.
- Proof of Identity: (e.g., U.S. Birth Certificate or valid Passport).
- Social Security Number: (e.g., Social Security Card or W-2 form).
