Chapter 9: Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Even the most careful driver can face a sudden vehicle malfunction, a traffic stop, or a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in these high-stress situations is a critical component of driver safety and legal responsibility. This knowledge not only helps prevent a bad situation from becoming worse but is also a key part of the driver’s exam, ensuring all new drivers understand their duties on the road.

Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden mechanical failure can be frightening, but a prepared driver can maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop. The key is to avoid panic and follow established procedures.

A diagram shows the rear view of a vehicle with a driver using hand signals to indicate a left turn, a right turn, and a stop or slow down.

Tire Blowout

A blowout is a rapid loss of tire pressure that can pull the vehicle sharply to one side.

  1. Grip the Steering Wheel Firmly: Hold the wheel with both hands to counteract the pull.
  2. Do Not Brake: Do not slam on the brakes. This can cause a loss of control.
  3. Ease Off the Accelerator: Let the vehicle slow down gradually on its own.
  4. Steer Straight: Focus on keeping the vehicle moving straight in its lane.
  5. Pull Over Safely: Once the vehicle has slowed to a manageable speed, activate your turn signal and pull completely off the road into a safe area. Engage your emergency flashers.
