Chapter 8: Sharing the Road

Safely sharing the road with others is a cornerstone of responsible driving, requiring constant awareness and courtesy. This knowledge is vital for the driver’s exam, which tests a driver’s understanding of how to interact with vulnerable road users, large trucks, and emergency vehicles. More importantly, applying these principles in daily driving prevents tragic collisions and ensures that everyone, from pedestrians to truck drivers, can travel safely.

Pedestrians and Bicyclists

Drivers of motor vehicles bear a significant responsibility to protect vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists. Due to their lack of physical protection, a minor collision for a car can be catastrophic for them.

Driver Responsibilities to Pedestrians

• Crosswalks: Drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in any marked or unmarked crosswalk. When a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian to cross, it is illegal for another vehicle to pass the stopped vehicle.
• Blind Pedestrians: A driver must use extra caution when approaching a pedestrian who is blind. When a pedestrian using a white cane or a guide dog is crossing or waiting to cross the street, the driver must come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the person has safely passed.
• General Caution: Drivers must always be watchful for pedestrians, especially children who may dart into the street unexpectedly, and elderly pedestrians who may need more time to cross. Always yield to pedestrians when turning at an intersection.
