7. → Safe Driving Practice
Becoming a licensed driver is only the first step; becoming a safe driver is a lifelong commitment to awareness and skill. Safe driving practices, often called defensive driving, are about proactively identifying and mitigating risks before they become emergencies. This knowledge is not just for the driver’s license test; mastering concepts like space management, adjusting to conditions, and avoiding dangerous behaviors is the key to protecting yourself and others on the road every single day.
Principles of Defensive Driving
Defensive driving means being constantly aware of your surroundings and anticipating potential hazards. It involves seeing the “big picture” and maintaining enough space and time to react to the unexpected actions of other drivers or sudden changes in road conditions.
Scanning
Effective scanning is the habit of keeping your eyes moving and actively searching the entire driving environment. Instead of staring at the road directly in front of your car, you should:
- Look Ahead: Scan at least 20 to 30 seconds down the road. In the city, this is about one block; on the highway, it’s about a quarter of a mile. This gives you time to see potential problems like stopped traffic, pedestrians, or road hazards well in advance.
- Check Mirrors: Check your rearview and side mirrors every 5-8 seconds to be aware of traffic behind and beside you. This helps you know if a vehicle is tailgating you or moving into your blind spot.
- Scan Intersections: Before entering an intersection, look left, then right, then left again. Even with a green light, you must scan for drivers running the red light or pedestrians crossing against the signal.
