9. → Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities
Even the most careful drivers can experience unexpected vehicle failures or be involved in a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in an emergency can prevent a minor problem from becoming a catastrophe. Understanding your legal duties after a crash or during a traffic stop is equally critical for protecting yourself and others, and these procedures are a key component of the driver’s knowledge exam.
Vehicle Malfunctions
A sudden vehicle malfunction can be frightening, but a prepared driver can maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop. The key is to avoid panic and not overreact.
Tire Blowout
A blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure in a tire, which can pull the vehicle sharply to one side.
- Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands to maintain control.
- Do not slam on the brakes. This can cause the vehicle to spin.
- Ease your foot off the accelerator and allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
- Activate your turn signal and steer carefully to the side of the road once you have slowed to a safe speed. Stop in a safe location away from traffic.
