Chapter 9: Emergencies & Legal Responsibilities

Even the most careful drivers can experience unexpected vehicle failures or be involved in a collision. Knowing how to react calmly and correctly in an emergency can prevent a minor problem from becoming a catastrophe. Understanding your legal duties after a crash or during a traffic stop is equally critical for protecting yourself and others, and these procedures are a key component of the driver’s knowledge exam.

Vehicle Malfunctions

A sudden vehicle malfunction can be frightening, but a prepared driver can maintain control and bring the vehicle to a safe stop. The key is to avoid panic and not overreact.

Tire Blowout

A blowout is a rapid loss of air pressure in a tire, which can pull the vehicle sharply to one side.

1. Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands to maintain control.
2. Do not slam on the brakes. This can cause the vehicle to spin.
3. Ease your foot off the accelerator and allow the vehicle to slow down gradually.
4. Activate your turn signal and steer carefully to the side of the road once you have slowed to a safe speed. Stop in a safe location away from traffic.
