Chapter 10: Your Vehicle

Use this guide to prepare for the exam, and refer to the official manual for complete details.

Owning and operating a vehicle comes with significant legal responsibilities that extend beyond just knowing how to drive. Ensuring your car is properly titled, registered, insured, and equipped with functioning safety features is a fundamental requirement of Nebraska law. This knowledge is not only essential for avoiding fines and legal trouble but is also a critical component of road safety, as a well-maintained vehicle is less likely to cause a collision.

Title, Registration, and Insurance

Understanding the legal documents and requirements for your vehicle is the first step of responsible ownership.

  • Vehicle Title: A Certificate of Title is the legal document that proves you own the vehicle. It contains information like the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), the owner’s name and address, and any lienholders (such as a bank that financed the car). You must apply for a Nebraska Certificate of Title within 30 days of purchasing a vehicle or becoming a new resident.
  • Vehicle Registration: Registration is the process of officially recording your vehicle with the state, which allows it to be legally operated on public roads. In Nebraska, you must register your vehicle annually with your county treasurer. Upon registration, you will receive license plates and a validation sticker that must be placed on the rear plate.
  • License Plates: Most vehicles in Nebraska are required to display two license plates—one on the front and one on the rear. The plates must be securely fastened, clean, and clearly visible at all times.

Common Mistake:
Many new residents or first-time car buyers confuse the title and registration. The title proves ownership (who owns it), while the registration grants permission to use it on the road (who can drive it legally). You must first title the vehicle in your name before you can register it.
